We have created a workshop to facilitate teaching geography and cultures in the early childhood classroom. We have created the "Where in the World is Curious George?" project in order to create a real connection to the students. When we introduce a continent, we talk about the important monuments, animals, food, and other objects that represent each continent. Then, together we create the package to send Curious George to a continent.
I have sent Curious George with family, friends on vacation, friends on honeymoon, colleagues and anybody that is traveling and is willing to take him. They take pictures of Curious George in important places in each country. Then, I show the pictures to my students and we talk about what Curious George saw and how they would feel if they traveled with George.
Also, we have different workstations that we incorporate into our reading, listening, fine motor skills, pretend play and our special traveling workstation. During our workshops, we provide the teachers with materials and ideas necessary to build their own workstations.
Geography is a difficult concept for students to understand, by making it fun and engaging, your students will become world connoisseurs!
